About Lawrenceville, Georgia
The historic town of Lawrenceville was chartered in 1821 and is considered the oldest city in the Atlanta metro area. The town gets its name from American Navy Commodore James Lawrence, who gave the famous command during the War of 1812: “Don’t give up the ship!” Shortly after the town’s founding, the first permanent structure erected was a courthouse.
For much of its early history, Lawrenceville was a farming community and surrounding families came into town to purchase various goods or trade livestock. Lawrenceville slowly grew as new families migrated into the area and railroads were built nearby. Until the first paved road was built in 1929, Lawrenceville locals primarily got around by riding mules.
Clearly, things have changed a great deal since those mule-riding days. The city’s population grew steadily through the early 20th century as a number of major employers came and went in the area. The city more than doubled in population from 1940 to 1970, and again from 1980 to 1990, when it hit nearly 17,000 residents. Today, about 30,000 people call Lawrenceville home.
Infamously, Lawrenceville was the scene of a shooting that had national repercussions. In a 1978 obscenity trial at the Lawrenceville courthouse, Hustler magazine owner and publisher Larry Flynt was shot by a gunman who was never identified. Flynt has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.
Oliver Hardy, of the comedic duo Laurel and Hardy, spent some of his youth in Lawrenceville. Other famous individuals to come out of Lawrenceville include retired pro wrestler Ric Flair, Ezzard Charles (the boxing champion who defeated Joe Louis in 1950), actor Michael Kelly (House of Cards, Man of Steel), actor Wes Chatham (The Expanse, The Help, Hunger Games) and Hee Haw regular Junior Samples.
